Just one of those days...

Do you ever just have one of those days when God smiles upon you and you end up with supafly hair? Today was one of those days for me.  Call me vain, but after I got done creating THIS masterpiece I just had to capture the moment. So hello MacBook! Hello webcam!

Now... this last one needs a little explaining. Once I was bored with just the plain ol' NORMAL pictures, I decided to go for some super satanic ones. As you can see, I was extremely successful. Also, this is another good reason to not bleach my hair -- it would turn my teeth black and leave me with AWFUL roots.

complex waves

Okay so... I understand sight: lightwaves from the sun reflect off of objects and bounce into my eyes which interpret the rays and transform them into colors and shades.

I also understand sound: vibrations travel through the air and my ear interprets those waves into sounds.

And touch is pretty easy too, I mean... physical contact between my hand and something else.

But taste and smell are a bit trickier. How are smells transmitted through the air? What gives my nose the ability to interpret those "smell waves" (or as I will call them, "smaves")? How do my tastebuds work?

Does anybody else find these two senses frustratingly elusive?

Dax Flame

ok. I love a boy. It's official. He is 16 years old, and his name is Bernich Jauch III, but he goes by the name, "Dax Flame"

He has a vlog on YouTube in which he shares his feelings (often violent) and I am a dedicated viewer. I love his videos, and apparently lots of other people do too because his channel is in the top 25 most subscribed of all time on YouTube. Way to go, Dax! He has Asperger's Syndrome which is a high-functioning form of autism. I love it - really. People claim he's acting, but I know you can't fake this.

Here's a little bit just to show you what he's like. In this one he is particularly upset, but my favorite part is when he stops for a second to comb his hair. Oh Dax....

Yeah, did you notice the cutoffs? Quite a nice addition if you ask me. I promise he really is usually not this violent, but wouldn't you be a little upset if YOUR younger cousin thought he was STRONGER than you? Even though you are 16!!??

So I love watching his videos on YouTube. They are often emotional, and he always seems to have something to say. Some of my favorites are: Chick-Fil-A, Q&A Part 2, I accidentally stole an iPod, New (Girl)friend, and Rude Girl and Boy. But as of late, I've also come to appreciate him through a different medium. He added me a friend on Facebook. That's right. I've never felt more popular in my life. I took a quick peak at his profile, and lo and behold, I found some gems. On facebook there's an option to list some of your favorite quotes, and he decided to fill them all up with quotes that HE had coined. (Thanks Jen, for reminding me). They are beautiful. This is gonna be copy and paste here, so take a minute to enjoy the misspellings and syntax errors please. Enjoy!! I think it's clear because of the last one that we are meant for each other. His description of love definitely describes the "horror -- just below the blossom" that I have found.

Bernice Jauch III's Favorite quotes:

"Oh what a web of weave when we try to lie."
-Daxflame

"The only thing to be scared of is being scared itself."
-Daxflame

"If you think you are cool, the grass is always greener somewhere else, meaning that you are maybe a jerk and maybe conseded."
-Daxflame

"Love is like a rainbow, except you never know what you get?"
-Daxflame

"Sometimes the most Brilliant things come in packages you didn't even know."
-Daxflame

"Magic does'nt exist? Oh really? Than explain Magic tricks you nimwit."
-Daxflame

"Even the strongest are not strong if they don't know the ways to things that only the best know."
-Daxflame

"I've seen fire and I've seen rain, but never a face so handsome as Daxflame."
-Unominous

"After you have lived oh so many years, the times changes sometimes right along with you. But we also could just look at are watch so the pot won't boil. And this is as if we were stopping time itself."
-Daxflame

"People are like the essence of a afternoon, but we may only have so many of the chances before time runs out like crazy?"
-Daxflame

"Elephants are fat, Birds are small, Aliens are real, but how do we not know that this is just not just opinions?"
-Daxflame

"Love takes hearts for bloody pulps and it ends in worst of ways."
-Daxflame

Words

I just love it when I have an epiphany and figure out some relatively simple word... but it just dawns on my what it REALLY means when I break down the words, or recognize the latin roots, etc.  Some examples, you ask? Sure:

• rainbow: rain-bow (not like a hair bow, mind you, a BOW like... BOW AND ARROW)

• cooperate: co-operate (like, two people working together to operate something)

• coordinate: co-ordinate (as in, two directions together indicating a specific point on a grid!)

• creative: It's related to the word, create. Yeah. Blows my mind

• Diagon Alley: Diagonally.

• Altitude: The latin root alta means tall (well, at least in Spanish alta means tall)

Some words/abbreviations/contractions I'm still a little iffy about:

• Bobby pin. Why?

• Charles = Chuck? Since when?

• Pound = lb

• Can not = can't. Will not = won't. What?

• Also... where do symbols come from? Who decided that $ should signify money?

Love according to a 6th grader...

As my Mom can attest, it's no exaggeration to claim that I'm a dramatic person. If you can imagine it, however, I was even MORE dramatic as a child. Really. I have a very vivid memory of my mom doing my hair (this is in my old house so I had to be 4 or 5) and she asked me to run up and grab an elastic. I returned back down the stairs and it turns out I had retrieved the wrong kind (I had gotten one of those bead kind that is shaped like a lemniscate) so my mom told me to go get another kind I and I just lost it. I broke down and started crying and saying that I was such a horrible person for grabbing the wrong kind. "How could I have been so stupid?" Yeah, like I said... dramatic. So my dad scooped me up in his arms and tried to calm me down by pointing out the ridiculous nature of the scene, and of course adding in some of that humor for which he is so loved. "There are lots of things worth crying about." I remember him saying, "if I had spread cheese all over your arm, for example, THAT would be an appropriate time to cry, but THIS? This is not something you should be crying about." Of course the cheese line got me. And while I tried to still milk out the attention for all it was worth, I found my self giggling uncontrollably which of course was mission accomplished for my dad.

So fast forward 6 or 7 years to the 6th grade. We had a special assembly where an author came and did a little workshop for JUST the 6th graders. Because face it, 6th graders rule the school. So she gave us an outline for a sample poem we were supposed to write. We would choose a topic, and then relate it to an animal, a tool, and a plant. The example was something about how we could describe our teachers as venus fly traps and bears or something (don't ask me why I remember that, but the venus fly trap image just stuck). Most of my peers wrote about hairspray, or lightsabres, or cars or something, but I, being the dramatic, oh-so-mature pre-teen I was (and still am, in some ways) decided I would write mine about love. I remember thinking I was being SO deep and passing off wisdom beyond my years. As I look back at it now, I can't help but laugh...

Love Is....

Love is a wild lemour, swinging around the veins of your innocent heart.

Love is a tube, allowing mixed emotions to flow freely through your confused heart.

Love is a rose, with golden, shimmering beauty above, but tragic horror- just below the blossom.

Isn't that incredible? I mean really. Between the creative spelling of "lemur" and the somewhat graphic primate imagery, it's tough to find a favorite part. Also, I'd like to know what kind of "tragic horror" I had experienced in my 12 year love life...

Also - since when is a tube a tool? I think I what I was trying to convey was something more like a PVC pipe, but we all know that wording it like THAT would be far less poetic.

Weird

Do you ever stop to think about something, and realize that it's just... really really weird? For example:

• Eyebrows - random little tufts of extra course hair above your eyes. I get that they're supposed to block sweat from seeping into your vulnerable eyes, but still. Weird. And even though I think we'd all look even weirder without them, why are they always under such scrutiny? Why does conforming to the normally accepted codes of grooming make you more feminine? Why are they such a big deal that we go out of our way (and into the direct path of intense pain) just to make them look like everyone else's? How come sometimes really blonde people have really bushy, dark eyebrows? I feel bad for them....

• Cars - I think about this one a lot. How random is it that someone came up with the theory about strapping an engine to thousands of pounds of steel, and plopping someone into the front left (or front right - I don't want to discriminate...) seat with a little wheel that can  control it all? Plus the fact that it just picked up so quickly... that no one challenges it. I often wonder about what the world would be like if just a few key people hadn't been born, or hadn't been in the position to share their ideas. Had Henry Ford (at first I typed "Harrison Ford" on accident - I guess that just shows where MY mind is) not streamlined the production process and marketed the infamous Model-T, would the type of automobiles so popular today even be mainstream?

• Clothes- who decided that a skirt or dress is feminine? How is it more masculine to have your legs completely enveloped in fabric? How weird are accessories, huh? I mean, I criticize ancient women and men I see in museums attempting to perk up their style with a few beads, or a nice piercing, but how is that really different from modern jewelry? Is a necklace more than just some metal or fibers strung across the neck to draw attention? And isn't it even a little barbaric that I choose to poke metal through my earlobe and dangle something shiny on the end of it?

• The concept of "forever"- probably one of the most frustrating things for me is that I'm so limited in my mental capacity. How frustrating it is that I can't even begin to comprehend these topics because of my mere mortal mind. When I really think about it... EVERYTHING that I consider, every thought I entertain, every dream and aspiration is based at least in some small degree on the concept that EVERYTHING has to end. I can't even comprehend the idea of forever because to me, everything is finite. Everything has a time limit. So when I really focus on imagining FOREVER, it blows my mind. Really. I get weirded out every time I think about it for too long.

• Reality TV shows - Why do people get so much joy out of watching other people a) get embarrassed, b) fail, c) make fools of themselves, or d) all of the above? How is THAT supposed to be entertaining?

• Language (both oral and written) - How incredible is it that I can think something, and be able to put into words how I feel? Or even just that our minds are complex enough to be able to recognize letters: a series of familiar lines, strokes and dots and interpret those into words, which alone can still convey some meaning but strung together can create complex scenarios and portray complex emotions - all within a fraction of a second!? Or the evolution of language. English, Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Portuguese, probably even Polish :) all evolved similarly in that they all use letters combined to make words combined to make sentences which show deeper meaning. But many oriental languages, rather than being based on small characters to make words have individual characters for each word - each emotion - each idea. I'm reminded of one of my favorite Star Trek episodes (mock me if you will) where Captain Picard is trapped on an alien planet, and the oh-so-convenient universal translator cannot even help him completely understand the native language, because even when it was translated into English, the syntax was too foreign to completely understand. Picard eventually has an epiphany in which it becomes clear that this foreign language had no concept of present tense,  or current emotions. That everything was related back to cultural fables, and generations-old stories and legends. To express something, they had to reference a previous incident. For example, the apex of the episode is that one of the natives keeps repeating the phrase, "Darmok and Gilad at Tenagra" and Picard can't figure out what he's saying. It turns out that Darmok was a great hero, sort of the beowulf to this planet's culture. He encountered a great beast at the island of Tenagra, and was able to defeat it only with the help of Gilad, a former enemy. So when this creature is repeatedly crying out, "Darmok and Gilad at Tenagra" he is proposing an alliance. Isn't that interesting? But then I think... isn't this concept of an entirely historical context sort of true of English, and all other formal means of communication as well? My verbal and written expressions are limited by words that someone in the past has coined. I can't just make up a new word, say, "smurfglash" to explain how I'm feeling at the moment and expect anyone else to understand! Language, in the inefficient way that we use it (person A thinks, speaks, person B hears, converts, comprehends, interprets, and forms a response) will always be tied down in this way because of the necessity for universality.

• Competition - Why am I always so competitive? And it's not just me, it's the entire human race, I think. I think it's directly related to the fact that we all have this mind-set that everything is finite. That we're all running on fossil fuels and there's no source of renewable energy. Why do I have to be better than someone else? Would it really make a difference in the end if we all reach the same goal - but someone reaches it first, or someone passes the finish line and has just a little more momentum so that after skidding to a stop they're ahead of me linearly? Why do I always think that others' successes minimize mine?

Wow. That was a lot deeper than I had intended (especially since I never thought I'd divulge my embarrassingly passionate love for Star Trek). But seriously, don't you think eyebrows are weird?

I want to believe...

So, as promised, I wanted to make this a thorough blog about ALL my passions and weird things that I contemplate. While it started out just 100% Mika, I want to share THIS obsession with all of you as well. It is called: X-files, or mostly just....

David Duchovny. Ow OW!

Check out these beautiful pictures of Special Agents Mulder and Scully of the FBI. How can you not love those 90's haircuts? David's beautiful wave, and Scully's poof and shoulder pads are only SOME of the things that make this show so enjoyable...

Another great shot of the 2 of them. Oh the love. I have seasons 1-7 (of 9 total). The reason I don't have 8 and 9 is because David Duchovny isn't even IN them. NOT even worth it.  I started really getting into this winner of a show the summer after 8th grade. I watched all 7 seasons a few times in those few months. My record was that I watched an entire season (season 6 in case you were wondering) in 4 days. one day was 8 episodes, and then that night there was a Stake dance. How could life for a nerdy 14 year old get any better?

Here's another reason I love this so much. Blood. Scully is, (as she proudly proclaims AT LEAST once every episode) a "medical doctor" so she gets to do autopsies ALL the time. It is great. They are always super bloody and 90s-tastic, and atleast once or twice a season, the patient comes back to life halfway through the procedure! Yay for predictable plots!

One last tantalizing look at this 90's hunk. Yay for him. Yay for him making X-Files so great.

Also. Newsflash. There is an X-Files MOVIE coming out soon! I could not be more thrilled about this. July 25th. Katie and I are going to have an all-day marathon and then go to the midnight release. Best plan EVER!

New Backpack

Hello. This is my new backpack that I'm going to get. Its name is "Politan" and this particular color is called "Glenn Plaid" I will call it brown and light brown. I'm going to wear it every day when I walk to my blastedly early class at BYU with my BFF Katie. It will serve me well for many moons.

The best minute and a half you'll spend ALL DAY!

As I'm sitting on my bed this morning in my east-facing bedroom with the uninvited sun beating down violently on my already uncomfortably warm back, indulging myself in a little Mika YouTube hunting, I come across THIS little treasure. Honestly - this is probably my favorite clip on all of YouTube. It's only a minute and a half - and it will brighten your day no matter HOW awful it may have been up to this point, you just can't help but smile during, immediately after, and for hours to come as you fondly think back to the simple joys of Mika's sensuous hips. Enjoy.....

Probably my favorite part is just when he has a classic Mika moment and ignores what everyone else is saying/doing and just blurts out what he's thinking at the moment. (0:59) I LOVE that about him. He really is rude and immature (hmm... what other tall, skinny guy does this remind us of?), but I'm in love with every childish piece of him!

How great would it be to just be BFFs with him?! To just be able to play with him like this all the time and enjoy his adorableness, and just dance with him, and talk with him, and just BE WITH HIM! My heart aches for that.
