Redefining Myself

They say college is all about finding yourself. Well, I don't know who "they" are, but I think they're right! Coming to college I was anxious for a chance to have a new social group, to start over with a relatively clean slate, socially. I went to school with the same people from 1st grade on. This normally wouldn't be a problem because it was a great group of people, but there was a little problem called: I happened to be an annoying little brat who felt the need to be weird to gain attention. From faking poor eye sight so I could get glasses, to faking injuries so I could use crutches, to marching around yelling "Save the ants!" while chastising people for not looking where they walked - I was one crazy little girl. Junior High was a little better, but not much. High School was a lot better. I was still weird, but hopefully in a better way and for better reasons. I LOVED choir and was probably best known as some kind of "choir girl" throughout especially my junior and senior years. Now, there are many categories that would certainly be worse to be associated with, but I was excited for a chance to NOT be choir girl.

I don't know who I am now -- how people see me who have only known me this year. Am I defined by my flamboyant displays like running around the quad at midnight in my Onesie? Hopefully not. Am I the funny girl? Maybe. Am I known as a follower? A leader? Do people like being around me? Do people who've known me all along think I've changed? I really don't know. But did I leave an impression on people? Do I stand out in people's memories? I hope so.

Stranger in Moscow

Let's be honest. My feelings about Michael Jackson are not exactly a secret. While I usually deny his existence after about 1987 (Smooth Criminal), this music video, and the 1995 MTV Music Videos Awards performance are acceptable.

Despite his Ferra Fawcett hair and being at just about the peak of his womanliness, this is a BEAUTIFUL video. The cinematography is breathtaking, and I think the vocals are really just hauntingly beautiful.

What do you think? Are you able to get past the creepiness and appreciate this as a musical and cinematic masterpiece? Or does the feathering just get to you too much?

A Medical Oddity

Is it possible that I'm the first human to regrow their wisdom teeth? I am having some immense pains in my gum... feel like I'm teething again. I think my wisdom teeth apparated back into my mouth and are trying to poke through the gums. Hmm... maybe I could get paid to take part in a research trial? Maybe I CAN afford to go to college!

Boycott

I think this holiday is dumb. I forgot it was St. Patrick's Day until this morning. When I realized that, i changed outfits from my green shirt I had coincidentally chosen to wear to a red based outfit. Opposite! Take THAT stupid holiday!

P.S. If this holiday were really about celebrating Irish culture, that would be a different story. But because it's not, I can hate it.

For the love of nerds...

My dad told me this joke the other day, and I thought so highly of it I decided to put it on this majestic pedestal that is my blog. Hope you enjoy! Nerdy jokes are the best because it's like an inside joke with all the smart people in the world!

A biologist, a physicist, and a mathematician form a surveillance team and begin watching a house they believe to be empty. After a short while, 2 people go into the house.  A while later, 3 people leave the house.  The biologist says, "Look, they reproduced!"  The physicist says, "There must have been an error in the measurement."  The mathematician says, "If one more person enters the house, then the house will be empty again."

Ode to/from Jeanine

My dear, sweet friend Jeanine is an angel. She is ALWAYS supportive but is still honest. I LOVE that about her. She is one of my best best friends I have met this adventurous year at University (I feel cooly foreign when I say that). A couple Sundays ago we napped together in the glorious warmth of our pseudo-Spring that we got this year. Here's a picture of the lovely experience, followed by some of my favorite pictures of Jeanine.

Look how precious we are! Holding hands in the sun.

This is right before Neon Night (which accidentally turned into IHOP night...)

Oh Jeanine, thou art so beautiful!

Sometimes she dresses up as her Mexican doppleganger, Juan.

She comes to SAVERS with me! And finds beautiful windbreakers that have the magical ability to be many different colors at once. What a treasure (Jeanine AND the jacket)

Yesterday she wrote me some raps to cheer me up from my calculus-induced melancholy mood! They are quite wonderful. Enjoy!

Melissa's got a fly booty,
She likes guys that are a little fruity
I wish I had her chestnut hair
that makes all the fellas stare.

Can't you hear that thunder?
Cause my world is goin' under
without your pretty smile
and your pinpin' kickbutt style.
OoOoOoooo... LaLaLaLa
Melissa, I'll love you all my days
I can never forget the ways
you made me fe-el
Oh, I love you more than ve-al
MmMmMmMmm

The Struggle Toward Apathy

Attempting to re-prioritize.
Reasoning my way through it.

Personal Growth

Have you ever seen those shows where people face their fears to become a better person? I'm not talking about Fear Factor where stupid people eat and/or lay in gross things for the chance to win money, I'm talking about intervention-type shows where people who have irrational (or sometime even rational) fears challenge themselves to FACE them in the hopes that they can improve themselves and become better/stronger people. Well my friends - yesterday I did just THAT (minus the "being broadcast on network television" part).

I went to the Monte L. Bean Museum with a couple friends after lunch yesterday. It is a favorite place of mine (despite a somewhat rocky history) and I wanted to spread the joy to Jordan and Mike, who, until that point were Bean Museum virgins.

Because my monkey fears exist, and I am not subtle, both knew about my severe distain for Satan's spawn. So when we passed the first baboon (on the first floor, by the water buffalo and hippo, you know?) I just played it cool: slight intake of breath, but no audible reaction. By the time we were upstairs by the dik-dik heads and porcupine, however, I was getting a little freaked out. The boys convinced me to "kiss" the mounted baboon head. I was reluctant at first, but how often would I get the chance? Mike started stroking the baboon's face, which didn't help, but it was better than the "ooh-ooh-ahh-ahh" they'd been teasing me with before. Jordan was kind enough to capture the moment.

(Holy - that was a way long explanation... I mostly just wanted to show you THIS hardcore picture) Please notice how menacingly growly that stupid monkey was. I was very scared and it took me a full minute to get THIS close to him.

Also, just for the record: it felt like slash WAS a lot closer than it looks. This makes it look like I was not in breathing range of that guy, which I WAS.

Word of Advice...

Just a little tip for if you ever find yourself on the 2100 floor of Hinckley Hall on campus at BYU in Provo, Utah, and are in need of a shower.

Choose the left-most shower because it has the best water pressure.

You're welcome.
