Well, simultaneously one said,
"He's dead."
and the other,
"No one cares."
Not letting the negative comments affect her, our heroine proceeded to celebrate anyway.
I made a birthday cake (no black and white symbolism here, just straight up funfetti*) and we sang and blew out imaginary birthday candles.
I think he would be pleased.
